MORE LOCAL SOLUTIONS

A small business owner was preparing to head out of town for a meeting with a client when he discovered that every time he tried to access his sales presentation in the laptop all he got was an error message. He discovered this with only 2 hours to spare before he had to be at the airport. Needless to say when he called me to ask for help, he was in a state of panic. I told him not to worry, we’d have it all repaired in an hour and that I was on my way to his address already. He was completely amazed when I located the problem causing the error to occur and had him back into his presentation in only 45 minutes from the time he dialed my number. He was not late for the flight and landed the new account the next day. It was the biggest sale in his career and won him and his family a 7-day vacation in the Bahamas when he made the top salesman in his district for that quarter. How do I know this? He looked up the website while in the islands and sent me a postcard of the beach. The message?

“Thanks Thomas, if it weren’t for you … I wouldn’t be sitting on the sand sipping a rum and coke.”

After his wife passed away, an elderly man got a computer from his grandchildren for Christmas. The adult grandkids thought surfing the Internet would help him pass time and broaden his world. He was having the time of his life online and playing around in Photoshop but began having problems getting booted off the Internet and the PC freezing while working with images. His granddaughter found my website because he could no longer sign onto the Internet. She called me to set up an onsite appointment because she couldn’t figure out the solution herself.

When I arrived at the gentleman’s home 20 minutes later, he apologized laughingly that he only knew enough to be dangerous. I assured him these things happen all the time. I located the problems in his PC’s registry, unused programs and fixed those along with a regular computer maintenance service. He was happy as a clam when his computer was back up to top speed and he could get into his favorite card tournament room on time for the next scheduled game with his pals.

A local small, but busy printing business went out and purchased all new PC’s for their office to update their graphics department capabilities. The owner’s son thought he could get all the new software installed and the office network set up to save the company money. It turned out to be just a little over his head and the owner arrived on Monday morning to find that they had no computers to use at all.

He located my phone number by accessing the website on his iPhone and I was standing in front of his desk 15 minutes later. He was a whole lot calmer when I had two computers running independently to allow them to accomplish some of the morning’s tasks while I worked on the rest of the PC’s and correcting the network installation. By 3:30 pm the print shop owner was all smiles when all 6 of his computer stations were fully programmed and connected via the office network. He couldn’t thank me enough for solving all of his problems so fast.

A daycare center in the adjoining county upgraded to a larger computer because the PC they had was too sluggish online and to work in large graphic files. The owner wanted to do her advertising graphics in-house and be able to work on the Web faster. She figured her existing PC was too old to handle the job. The lady found my website and called to inquire about transferring the billing and correspondence information from the old hard drive to her new one. We arranged for me to visit the next morning and do the work when it wouldn’t interfere with a lot of parents coming in to pick up and drop off their children.

While in the midst of transferring data onto the new, larger hard drive I found a Trojan hidden in her accounting files that if I had blinked would have gone by unnoticed. Thankfully I caught it and was able to stop it from transferring into the new PC. When I told her about the virus and that her old computer was not too small but sluggish from the infection, she was horrified.

The thought that her customer’s billing information could have been jeopardized by such an intrusion if she were still signing onto the Internet on the old infected computer brought her to ask for assistance in better security. I installed a more powerful security suite on her new PC to give her the best anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware available. I also completely cleaned the old computer of all files and traces of the Trojan. A few days later she called to happily report she had recouped close to half the cost of her new PC by selling the old one on Craigslist.

A high school senior called after she found my website offering local computer services. She got a new computer that was taking forever to boot up even though it had a huge hard drive. The store she bought it at told her they found nothing wrong with it and they felt it was booting up as fast as could be expected. Since she had already transferred hundreds of files from her ancient PC, she was hoping I could figure out why it had this problem that only she was aware of. I met with her when she arrived home from classes that afternoon.

I was pretty sure I knew what the problem was before I got to her house. As I suspected, there were so many trial software programs attached to the start up it was bogging down the machine. Together we went through the manufacturer-installed list of teaser programs and removed 95% of them completely. The difference in time from power up to actually being able to work was phenomenal. When I left she asked if I had cards so she could hand them out to some friends. I was happy to oblige though her problem was a very common and simple solution on any newly purchased PC or laptop.
